How Commission Evaluates Speed: Gross WPM vs Net WPM
1. The Official 5-Stroke Rule
In government exams, a word is strictly defined as 5 keystrokes (including spaces and punctuation). Typing 1,750 keystrokes in 10 minutes equals exactly 350 words, or 35 Gross Words Per Minute.
2. Net WPM Penalty Formula
Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Error Count ÷ Total Minutes). If a candidate types 40 Gross WPM but commits 25 mistakes in 5 minutes, their Net WPM drops to 35 WPM. Accuracy is equally crucial as speed.
Frequently Asked Questions (अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल)
Q1: Can I use the Backspace key during the exam?
In SSC and BPSC typing tests, the Backspace key is allowed to correct erroneous characters within the current word. However, in Railway RRB typing tests, backspace and text editing are strictly disabled once a word is completed.
Q2: Which keyboard layout is used for Hindi typing in BSSC and Court exams?
Government commissions provide Remington Gail (on Mangal font) and Inscript layouts. Most candidates prefer Remington Gail as its layout is identical to traditional typewriter key sequences.
Q3: How often should I practice to achieve 35 WPM?
Consistently practicing three 5-minute sessions daily for 30 days is sufficient to progress from 20 WPM to 35+ WPM with over 95% accuracy. Focus on finger placement (Home Row: ASDF / JKL;) and avoid looking at the keyboard.
